When Super Typhoon Pepito hit Gigmoto, Catanduanes, it brought heavy rain and strong winds that destroyed homes, farms, and dreams. For the people of Gigmoto, the typhoon didn’t just take away their crops—it took away their main source of income and hope for the future. Despite these unimaginable challenges, the community rises each day with courage and a resolve to rebuild.
The Heart of Gigmoto’s Livelihood
Abaca farming is the main livelihood for most families in Gigmoto. Unfortunately, the typhoon destroyed 100% of the abaca farms. Since fallen abaca spoils quickly, farmers couldn’t sell or save their crops, leaving them with no income.
Abaca takes two long years to regrow, and for now, many families face an uncertain future without income. Other essential crops like coconuts, bananas, and vegetables were also heavily damaged, making it even harder for families to meet their basic needs.
“Mahirap, kasi yung bahay wala na, yung mga gamit, nabasa lahat, nabasag. Mahirap para sakin, mahal ang mga bilihin,” shared Mary Jane Sualibio, a mother from Sicmil. She, like many others, not only lost her home but also her family’s primary source of livelihood.
With no farms to depend on, the primary income earners of the affected families are considering leaving their hometown to pursue construction jobs or domestic service work in urban areas. While working in the cities offers an opportunity to earn a living, leaving Gigmoto means parting with their roots, families, community, and the life they have always known.
“Ngayon, wala na kabuhayan na kinukuhanan ko. Halos naubos na kaya yun ang isang hadlang, na kung saan ako kukuha ng kabuhayan,” said Roberto Sualibio, Mary Jane’s husband.
For families like theirs, the thought of starting over far away from home is as heartbreaking as it is daunting. Yet, the lack of local opportunities leaves them with little to no choice.
No Neighbor Left Behind
Good Neighbors Philippines is committed to standing with the people of Gigmoto, ensuring that no neighbor is left behind in their time of need. To provide immediate relief, we organized a community pantry for affected families, distributing essentials like rice, eggs, and vegetables.
We also partnered with Metrobank Foundation and Manila Water Foundation to supply clean drinking water, safeguarding the health and well-being of the community.
But we know that recovery doesn’t end with relief; that’s why we are working on long-term solutions. Our goal is to journey with our Good Neighbors in Gigmoto, helping them not only rebuild their lives but also prepare for future challenges.
In times of adversity, may we be inspired by the people of Gigmoto—lean on each other, find strength in our community, and hold onto hope. There are brighter days ahead, and with every step, we will never walk alone.
Together, we rebuild. Together, we rise.
