October 23, 2024 – Typhoon Kristine (also known as Tropical Depression Trami) entered the Philippines on October 21 and continues to cause heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding in many areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. On October 22, it became a stronger storm, with several areas now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) Nos. 1 and 2.
By 5:00 AM today, Typhoon Kristine remains a Tropical Storm. Some of the hardest-hit areas are in Region V, including Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon and Gigmoto, Catanduanes.
Impact in our Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon (Region V)
Since October 22, Prieto Diaz has been under TCWS No. 2, with very strong winds causing damage and danger. Flooding is now a major concern, with local officials raising the alarm for national assistance as regional rescue capacities are overwhelmed. As a result, government offices and schools have suspended operations, with employees instructed to work remotely. Power outages have affected communication and slowed down response efforts. Several families supported by Good Neighbors Philippines have been evacuated due to floods and landslides, with damage to homes and infrastructure still being assessed.
Impact in Gigmoto, Catanduanes (Region V)
Gigmoto is also under TCWS No. 2 and has become isolated due to blocked roads from landslides and floods. The local disaster response is stretched thin, prompting calls for national help. Power outages have affected the community, though fewer areas are flooded. A total of 56 families have been evacuated, and there have been minor landslides and road blockages in Brgy. Sioron and Brgy. Dororian. The full impact on sponsored families is still being determined.
Livelihood Disruptions and Infrastructure Damage
The livelihoods of the people in both CDPs have been significantly disrupted. Fishing activities, vital to the local economy, have come to a halt due to dangerous sea conditions. So far, there have been no reports regarding agricultural or fisheries damage, but assessments are ongoing.
Infrastructure damage is still being evaluated, but the continued power outage is slowing down response efforts. On a positive note, water supply and telecommunications in both regions remain operational, providing some relief amidst the disaster.
Call for Help and Ongoing Relief
With national support now deemed necessary, local officials are urging for immediate aid to be sent to the affected regions. Rescue and relief efforts are actively underway, but the impact of the disaster is so massive that it has overwhelmed the region’s abilities to cope. Even though times are tough, the strength of the people, along with the rapid mobilization of government and humanitarian support, gives hope to these communities during this crisis.
Good Neighbors Philippines, in collaboration with dedicated local volunteers, is diligently working to assist affected families and prioritize the safety of children and their families. Our commitment remains steadfast in delivering relief and support to every family impacted by this calamity. As our assessments continue, we will provide timely updates on the situation.
