Los Baños, Philippines, May 20, 2024 – An innovative collaboration has been solidified as Good Neighbors International (GNI) and The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a distinguished nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing global food security, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
This historic event marked the inauguration of an International Cooperation aimed at advancing global food security, sustainable agriculture, climate change resilience, and community development. In light of the increasing impact of El Niño and La Niña on rice production—El Niño causing severe droughts that reduce crop yields and La Niña bringing heavy rains and flooding that can damage crops—this cooperation is more crucial than ever. These climate challenges significantly affect our farmers, the backbone of our food systems, who play a crucial role in ensuring food security. We are excited to innovate further to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change by introducing drought- and flood-resistant rice varieties developed by IRRI.
The agreement is rooted in the shared vision of both organizations to promote and accelerate research in sustainable high rice production, enhance the rice value chain, and support the development of rural communities. By empowering our farmers and boosting productivity in the agricultural sector, we aim to create a more resilient and sustainable food system. Key areas of collaboration outlined in the MOU include:
- Strengthening global food security and policy frameworks.
- Enhancing the sustainability of rice production under the ongoing climate crisis and continually changing climatic conditions.
- Promoting rural community development through capacity building initiatives, particularly targeting young farmers and income generation.
Under the MOU, GNI will lead integrated community development efforts with a sustainable approach, emphasizing “community engagement” alongside sustainable agricultural development supported by IRRI. The organization will play a crucial role in monitoring and facilitating the adoption of new rice varieties and agricultural technologies among local farmers and communities.
IRRI, in turn, will be responsible for rice variety improvement and dissemination, addressing food crises, and adapting to climate change. Additionally, IRRI will contribute its expertise in agricultural science and education, policymaking, and project assessment tailored to the specific needs of recipient countries.
The MOU signing ceremony witnessed the participation of key figures, including Dr. Yvonne Pinto, Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), alongside Mr. Sun Kim, Director of the International Program Division of Good Neighbors International (GNI).
This partnership reaffirms our dedication to immediate and intensified collective efforts toward creating a world where nutritious food is accessible to all, natural resources are sustainably managed, and climate resilience is strengthened to meet the needs of present and future generations. Through research, active collaboration of different experts and stakeholders in the industry, and the participation of communities, we will take further steps towards improving the quality of life for everyone—a good change for the world.
