Luijay, a sponsored child, continues to battle with a rare disease called “Hirschprung Disease”, a birth defect in which some nerve cells are missing in the large intestine. He had this conduction since birth resulting in missing nerve cells in the muscles of the colon.
His father works as a small-scale fisherman which is only enough to send the children to school and other needs of the family, while his mother died due to Acute Respiratory Failure.
After birth, he had difficulty passing out feces which led to a bloated stomach and skin discoloration. In 2016, the child underwent an operation at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center through the help of other private organizations and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). However, it was suggested that he should have his second operation to achieve the normal way of passing out feces through the anus at any age.
Due to his operation, Luijay has to use a colostomy bag. This has affected him physically and mentally, the bag is causing him rashes to his operated area. Secondly, it also made him feel insecure due to the bad smell coming out of the colostomy area and he had to bring a lot of clothes to wipe his colostomy to avoid the offensive odor.
Despite this, Luijay continues to persevere every day for his education and family.
Now, Luijay is already a Grade 7 student and is physically well. However, he still needs support for his operation so that he may fully recover. His family has high hopes of pursuing further medical evaluation, and diagnostic tests to push through the operation to improve his situation, especially his development.
